Like many other Apple Watch developers, I felt drawn to the Apple Store today to try on the Apple Watch. I left the store feeling as excited as ever about developing for a fantastic new device. Here are my first impressions of the Apple Watch.
Sports Band
I’ll echo what people are saying about the Sports Band - it’s very soft and comfortable. The photos make it look stiff and stuck in a shape, which made me worry about the band properly wrapping and hugging my wrist. Trust me, there’s nothing to worry about with this band. I think people will love it like I did once they try it on.
Sizing
Choosing between the 38mm and 42mm case will be more about style than about what size fits your wrist. Both sizes fit on my small wrists.
Screen
The screen resolution and contrast make the apps and watch faces look gorgeous.
Interface
One surprising bit was that the even the smallest buttons were easy to tap. For example, you can easily tap the tiny face thumbnail around the VIP contacts ring even though the thumbnail size is very small. This means that a wider range of apps and games will be able to be built than I previously imagined.
One downside that we’ve heard that I also noticed was a bit of lag with the launch spinning wheel when in opening apps. I’m confident Apple will tighten this up over time.
Summary
Overall, the Apple Watch is clearly a fantastic little device that users are going to love.
If you’re interested in checking out some upcoming Apple Watch games, take a look at my new Apple Watch gaming studio called Robot 5 Studios. We have screenshots and videos up for 3 games so far (Berry Quest, Blackjack Mini, and Football Twos), and we’ll announce more every week.
